作品概要｜自転車生命体 Cycloborg
『自転車生命体 Cycloborg』は、映像とオブジェによるインスタレーション作品である。本作において映像は、物語とテーマの担い手として中心的な役割を果たす。一方、展示空間に配置された自転車のオブジェは、映像内で実際に使用されたプロップをそのまま現前化することで、映像の物語世界と現実空間とを物理的に接続する装置として機能している。
本作品は、人間がテクノロジーに依存せざるを得ない現代的状況を背景に、利便性の裏に潜む「依存」「自己同一性の揺らぎ」「社会との乖離」といった感覚に着目している。これらの問題は、単なる身体機能の補完にとどまらず、社会的・心理的な葛藤として顕在化する。本作では、自転車という日常的な道具を再構成し、作者自身とのインタラクションを通じて、テクノロジーとの関係性に内在する“生きづらさ”を視覚的に表現している。
こうした生きづらさを表現するために、本作品では自転車に二種類のプロトタイプシステムを搭載した。一つ目の「Tera cycle system」は、自転車によって生活の自給自足を完結させることを目指す実験的装置である。二つ目の「Respi cycle system」は、自転車のペダリングと呼吸の動作を連動させる。これら二つのシステムの導入によって、自転車は単なる移動手段としてではなく、テクノロジーとの共生に伴う生きづらさを表現する媒介装置として再定義される。
Work Overview | Cycloborg: The Bicycle Lifeform
Cycloborg: The Bicycle Lifeform is an installation work composed of video and object. In this piece, the video plays a central role as the bearer of both narrative and theme. Meanwhile, the bicycle object displayed in the exhibition space functions as a physical conduit that connects the fictional world of the video with the real space, by presenting the very prop used in the footage.
Set against the backdrop of a contemporary society where humans are inevitably dependent on technology, this work focuses on the sensations that lie beneath convenience—dependence, instability of self-identity, and estrangement from society. These issues manifest not merely as physical augmentations, but as social and psychological struggles. By reconstructing the everyday object of the bicycle and engaging in interaction with the artist themself, the work visually expresses the inherent difficulty of living that arises from the human-technology relationship.
To convey this sense of difficulty, the bicycle is equipped with two prototype systems. The first, the Tera Cycle System, is an experimental apparatus designed to achieve self-sufficiency in daily life through the bicycle. The second, the Respi Cycle System, links the pedaling motion of the bicycle with the act of breathing. Through the integration of these two systems, the bicycle is redefined—not as a mere means of transportation, but as a mediating device that embodies the challenges of coexisting with technology.
