ピンク・フロイドの自転車

ピンク・フロイド（Pink Floyd）は精神障害や教育重圧などによる錯乱や孤独を歌うプログレッシブ（先進的）なロック・バンドで、音楽的にも技術的にも革新的な取り組みで高く評価された。だが後には、お涙頂戴ブルースを大袈裟な楽曲構成と絢爛豪華な舞台装置で飾り立てるようになり、巨大で愚鈍な恐竜と揶揄されてしまう。そんな彼らの最初期の楽曲のひとつが「Bike」だ。

後の恐竜ロックとは似ても似つかず、歌詞の意味を考えても混乱するばかり。それもそのはず、当時のリーダーはシド・バレット（Syd Barrett）で、孤高の天才ソング・ライターと評され、精神障害が忍び寄るドラッグ中毒者でもあった。健康的で快活なレクリエーション、あるいは精巧な機械で極限に挑むスポーツ、といった一般的なイメージを超越する自転車がここにある。

この曲は1967年にリリースされたファースト・アルバム「夜明けの口笛吹き」のエンディング曲。少し遅れて登場するホークウィンドの「Silver Machine」（1972年）も自転車を主題にしたサイケデリック・ソング。その発想の元になった小説の作者アルフレッド・ジャリもまた幻覚性の高いアブサンの中毒者。健康と健全が尊ばれ、浄化される今日からは遠く隔たった世界で自転車が駆け巡っていた。
